She rolled onto her side and got back to her feet. Restless energy filled her, she wasn’t used to being trapped. For the moment her wings were useless and the knowledge spread through her like a sickness. Kari slowly made her way back around the room, using her hand on the wall to keep her balance. For weeks it had felt like someone had been watching her, it wasn’t unusually, even if the small town she’d grown up in, her blessing was striking but who would want to hurt her? Kari didn’t have enemies. Well, none that she knew about.

The door opened. A man stood there, in the shadows beyond it. Kari edged away. “Please let me go. I promise I won’t tell anyone.” He didn’t say anything but raised his arm. The light in the room caused the barrel of the gun to gleam as light reflected off of it. “Please don’t.” The words left her in a whisper. An audible pop, a stab of pain and Kari stared down, her eyes widened in shock. A dart with a dark brown feathered tip was embedded in her chest. She hit the floor hard, instead of the pain she expected, numbness spread instead.

As Kari tugged the dart free, darkness ate up her vision. She wanted to keep her eyes open but whatever he’d hit her with made that impossible. It was only when the man walked into the room, and she caught sight of the instrument in his hand, the long sharp blade that she realised…she should have fought harder to stay awake.
